The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is planning to upgrade the facilities at both these places. There would be battery-operated cars for people to move around in nature park and use of cycles will also be permitted. A plan to build a 60 metre long tunnel to enable underwater experience at the aquarium is also on the cards.
At present, around 10.5 to 11 lakh people visit Sarthana park ever year, whereas the footfall at Pal marine aquarium is close to 3.5 lakh people.
"We plan to go ahead with both these projects on public-private-partnership (PPP) basis and tenders would be floated today," in-charge zoo superintendent Prafful Mehta said.
SMC would invite offers from private operators to run battery-run vehicles, which will help children and senior citizens who find it difficult to walk around nature park. "It would take three months to complete the process of tendering and finalization of the private player," Mehta added. Expansion of aquarium is also on the cards as SMC is trying to get possession of a vacant plot meant for crematorium adjacent to the facility.
"Once we get the land, a techno-economic feasibility report would be prepared by a consultant and the project would be undertaken on PPP basis," Mehta said.
