Jankhana Patel, who contested from Choriyasi in Surat, is daughter of politician Raja Patel. After the death of Raja Patel in August 2015, she was elected from Choriyasi constituency in a byelection. She had won with a margin of 60,000 votes then.
Patel was able to retain her seat in 2017 elections by a massive margin of 1,10,819 votes. "This is unthinkable for an assembly seat. A win was assured, but not with such a margin," a family member said.
"This will make me to work harder for the people of coastal belt," said Patel, who hails from the coastal village of Dumas. When she was given ticket by BJP, she was a novice in politics.
When 26-year-old Harsh Sanghvi was given ticket by BJP in 2012, many could not believe it. He proved his critics wrong then by winning Majura seat by a margin of 71,000 votes.
"Harsh has been one of the most approachable and social media savvy MLAs in the city. He has also been one of the most vocal MLAs and a person devoted to issues related to river conservation and environment," a BJP leader said.
Majura seat was considered a safe bet for BJP along with that of Surat (West) in 2017. The fear of textile traders loomed large though, but Sanghvi, who is a Jain, was able to win with a margin of 85,827 votes, and remains youngest MLA in Gujarat.
Among the three, Vinu Moradia is a surprise package. He won Katargam seat by a margin of 79,230 votes, which looks like a miracle to many BJP supporters too. This seat was won by former minister of BJP Nanu Vanani by a margin of 45,000 votes in 2012 and after reservation agitation by Patidars, it had begun to look little dicey.
