Surat: Congress is facing dissent in its stronghold in Vyara assembly constituency with two senior Congress leaders resigning from the party and joining BJP with their 1,500 supporters in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah on Monday.
Director of Sumul Dairy Pravin Gamit joined BJP at a public meeting of Amit Shah in Vyara along with his 1,000 supporters in the party. Former Tapi district panchayat president Mavji Chaudhary's son Vijay Chaudhary also joined BJP with 500 party workers.
Vyara assembly constituency is considered a stronghold of Congress. In the last five assembly elections, BJP has not managed to win here. Sitting Congress MLA Punaji Gamit, who is a close confidant of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee working president Dr Tushar Chaudhary is three time MLA and is contesting for the fourth consecutive term. Vyara constituency, which is in Tapi district, has seen division of tribal votes on the lines of religion. But Punaji Gamit, who is a Christian, has been able to hold himself strong by winning Vyara seat again and again despite a local outfit 'Janak Juth' capturing Vyara town in local municipal elections two terms ago.
Political pundits believe dissent in the party is likely to impact poll prospects of Congress in Tapi and Surat districts. Dr Chaudhary, who is contesting from Mahuva assembly seat in Surat district, is also facing dissent from Congress leaders in Mahuva. Dr Chaudhary is being described as 'imported' candidate and some Congress workers are not working wholeheartedly for his victory.
Meanwhile, Tapi Congress Scheduled Castes cell president Praveen Parmar also joined BJP at a public meeting of Amit Shah in Bardoli.
